Here's the thing:

A deranged kid kills 32 other kids in college. He has "ismail ax" written on his arm in red ink. Fox news reports it, then this guy registers the domain:

His comment to the news: "I have no intention of making blood money from this domain." He has a parking page up, servers going to DomainControl.com. An estimated 550,000 hits were recorded by the Chicago Tribune alone for that phrase on Monday.

The domain is parked at NameDrive's servers:

QUESTION:

How many of us would try to register that domain name to take advantage of this tragedy? Unless you were registering it and sending all revenue to a fund for the families or some charity, my position is, YOU'RE A SCUMBAG.

I'd like to see the registrant of this domain name come on this forum and show us which charity he's sending his PPC rev from this domain, and how much he's sending. Then we can check with the charity to see if in fact he is sending the revenue directly back to the families of the dead students.

More on this later...

Based on the responses of some forum members on some other threads, there is nothing wrong with it, the news media makes money on it so why shouldn't we, its called capitalistic and opportunistic, I need to quit making it a moral issue and I need to get over it.

So...get over it Stephen.

I read that and thought it was a pathetic excuse, they come up with this lame reasoning to justify to themselves that its OK. Desperate people with low morals are the ones registering tragic domains, with the $$$ signs clouding there judgement. News agencies dont run with stories on how much money there going to make, they run with it based on what viewers want to see, there not cut throats trying to get rich quick.

A tragic domainer is worse than a ambulance chaser looking to make a finders fee

I am not surprised.
This kind of practice was expected.

Probably the list of domainres ready to take advantage of this dramatic event was long. But none will never know now!

One has been the first and being the first he is now guilty while all the others who maybe have in mind to get this opportunity now benefit of be anonymous.

Should this guy must be blamed?
Should you be blamed to have just have check if this name was taken?
What will have you done if you were yourself the first, did you register it?

Each one in his heart must think about this before judge possible faults of others.

Something is sure:
Nothing can excuse such practices, and less the money.

Nice. My cousin's child was injured in that attack at VT by jumping out a window.

And Primetime ABC held a one hour report with little or no commercials, showing there are some corporate MORAL standards.

There's a difference in holding the grand Capitalistic goals to high standards and then there's the argument of the slimy "capitalistic" exploitation of selling child slaves, forced labor, endangered species, blood diamonds, etc. All of which are "opportunistic". Which side are you on, Doc? Or do I need to even ask?

This side (response to:http://www.dnforum.com/showpost.php?p=1147997&postcount=9)
----------------------------------------------

I think the one thing that people fail to realize is that this affects many more lives than just the 33 dead. Family, friends, classmates.

And like my co-worker who I just spoke to. She just returned from VT campus. Her son lives in the dorm where the first shootings took place.

Her daughter called early yesterday morning and told her mother not to freak out if she heard the news about a shooting in the dorm where Ken lives. She said he is okay but the dorm is in "lock down". She told her mother she would talk to her latet.

She went to class like most of the student population did. Her class was in a building across from where the main massacre took place. They heard pop, pop, pop, had no idea what was going on, looked out and saw people jumping out of windows. The pop, pop, pop sound continued. I think it takes awhile for the brain to comprehend what the eyes are seeing.

This was one of the classes where the professor told his students to jump. He tried to hold the door shut. He was shot and killed. So were the last two students who tried to get out of the windows, but not in time.

Their mother came here to talk, to be consoled I presume. She wasn't scheduled to work so I guess that is why she was here just chit-chatting. Perhaps she needed to be around friends and co-workers before she went home. She had an exhausting day, spent time with her kids, and got to see Pres. Bush.

If you're going to complain a few people are taking advantage of a NEWS STORY to make MONEY, at least put it in context to what professional, longstanding news corporations do EVERYDAY of the year.
That is their job. To report the news.

How this compares to the three trials or cases mentioned is not even in the same league. (writer was comparing this to the OJ and Michael Jackson trial and Natalie Halloway).

Regging names to capitalize on events like this is not our job. It is our choice. But it certainly does not add credibility or validate our decision making. If someone wants to set up a memorial, site then so be it. But when the offer is to either set up a memorial site or sell it, that dulls the senses to the core.

I'll ask Carol if she and her children would like to buy this name so they can never put this ordeal behind them.
-----------------------------------------------

But, Stephen...who am I to judge. Hell, selling crack on the street corner is a quick buck and capitalistic and opportunistic also. Probably more profitable than domaining to begin with. Must be because it sure is big business even in small town America.

Virginia Tech campus is about an hour, if that much, from one of the two hospitals I work at. This particular hospital is on the North Carlina/Virginia Line. You might have heard of this little community. It's called Mt. Airy which includes this little community called Mayberry. I think there was a show or something.

Seems like every one here knows someone who goes to school at VT. An awful lot of Hokie Fans in the area.

And you gotta love the comparisons made between the Hollywood Media Circus of the OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson trials. Those were celebrities charged with crimes. Criminals vs. Victims...that in itself makes for interesting topic and discussion.

So, morals be damned is what I am picking up from some. I guess I should just be tickled shitless that this part of the country is finally getting the publicity, notariety, and the media attention I think has been long overdue and regulated to the Hollywood types.

there not cut throats trying to get rich quick.

Um, yes they do, and yes they are. They run these stories sponsored by advertising based on how much they will make from WHAT the viewers want to see. That's how it works.

Otherwise it would be called "Sunshine News 24/7". Slogan "It's all going to be okay."

Don't get me wrong this is a travesty. I don't stand for killing and or murder. My sympathies go out to everyone that were affected either directly or indirectly.

He should have used parked; all his traffic would have been mysteriously revoked 24 hours later :D

That would make a nice thread:

"Hey Donnie...where did my 550,000 hits a day go??? WTF???"

"Sorry, our downstream advertisers refused to pay, your account has been suspended."

Last night was the first night I had been to work since the shooting so needless to say there was quite a bit of conversation. Seems every one knows some one who goes to school there or or knows someone who knows someone, etc.

I guess when you're in Texas and the impact does not affect where you live and work or the people you know then its okay to think about being the first to reg the "biggies". Same with the Shuttle burning up on re-entry or the Waco Tragedy, or the historical Galveston Floods, or the UT campus shootings...oh Hell, that all happened in or over Texas...surely no on thought to reg those.

Sorry, I know its sarcasm and to each his/her own. Perhaps I am being a little over sensative to the whole domain issue over this. But regging a domain name for the sake of having one never even crossed my mind and I would not even know where to begin.

Maybe we should go after "www.AlCapone.com" There is an entire company based off of what he did. And it wasn't pretty.

Or how about "www.JacktheRipper.com" it forwards to a porn site. But that was over a hundred years ago so that's okay to disrespect those victims in a manner such as that.

How about something more recent. "www.ZodiacKiller.com" This person has the victims faces plastered all over the website and is hawking his DVD and Book and those family members are still alive. The pointer is a cross-hair isn't that cute?

I guess my question is "Why is this so shocking that people monopolize on this?"

Concur. The hypocrisy of some people amazes me.

This is simply a business, I personally don't check the whois of those domains but I knew they were gone in just a few minutes of news broadcast.

Domainers wait for this opportunity ... traffic !!!!!

As mentioned above jacktheripper, zodiac are just some examples

If you have the chance, will you register them all?

It's not even that. The real irony is I was reading about some of this on "yahoo news" guess what the ad was? "Need college loans?" Does Yahoo have their ads targeted or what?

If you need something to be pissed about be pissed at that. I'm reading about a college shooting and Yahoo is asking if I need a loan to go to one.

Who cares if this guy registered a domain. Stop getting worked up over such insignificant things - there are bigger problems.
