I was just thinking... with many domains being appraised here, seems a lot of times we are forgetting a few key points:

1. Domain resellers/collectors have their own system of valuation which is simply transparent to the average consumer.
2. Any business looking to create an online presentation is more likely to look at a good combination of letters or words which clearly outlines their line of products or presents a uniue marketable and brandable appeal.
3. The majority of consumers looking for either information, resources, products, locations or company information are not even a bit concerned with the domain name and even less with what comes after the dot. In the eyes of the consumers, news.tv is as good of a domain as news.com or even better. I use cheap-domainregistration.com and i dont care that their domain sucks and that i could be registering with register.com which is clearly a better domain, as long as cheap-domainresitration keeps giving me the prices and features i want.
4. Sure there is the fact of a short wasy to recall domain name having great value, but face it, we are not stupid, we can remember buystereos.com just as well as stereos.com
5. Majority of hype and high prices around 'premium' domains are caused by the hype itself. Look at beauty.cc - 1 million bucks. Why? Because they wanted the word Beauty. They could care less about it being a .cc If they wanted BeautifulGirls.us they would ahve had that. In the end its up to the buyer to determine whats worth what.
6. 3 letter dotcoms are valuable only if they find a business that could use the 3 letters. Who would want xzq.com?
7. What will happen when the businesses are given a wide choice of variants? .com .net .org .cc .us .ab .ac .ad. vh .br .co .car .air .x .c .ec , etc. What real world value would news.com hold over 50 other news. websites if their content is not up to par?
8. What happens if domains become regulated - 3 per registrant?
9. What happens if domain subscription/renewal prices are regulated and increased to $1000/year?
10. 9 didnt look right, so i had to have 10

Note: I am simply trying to look at the other side of the coin and in no way am trying to stir the water. Just some thoughts, feel free to state yours.

I believe that if you as a domain professional offer a business a choice of domains including a .com, and you don't indicate the advantages of a .com, then you are failing in you duty to your client.

You should also consider type-ins, and the memorability of a name seen on an advertising hoarding by a motorway. Beauty.cc id not as good as beauty.com, because the surfer will probably have forgotten the .cc when he gets home and type beauty.com.

There are a lot of other factors such as the potential for improving link popularity. Also buystereos is not as good as stereos because buystereos is more focused. An advice site with sales links has more potential for selling than just a selling site.

I think Point8T has made a number of very valid points that don't require comment or rebuttal. They are just good things for us to remember every once in a while.

Thanks!

good thought. but beauty.cc purchase was a hoax.

I dont think it was a hoax... i think it was a sign of things to come...

You mean more hoaxes? :)

If you want to cal it that, yes

"You mean more hoaxes?"

Touche, Duke! Rest assured. Good Luck.

How did Beauty.cc get sold, when the way the restrictions state!
.cc can not be transfered to another person(s) at this time.

I have "Lot.cc" which can represent many meanings. I liked it because it was short and easy to remember. I have had it on afternic.com for several weeks, without a bite. I bought the name without realizing that it was not ownership transferable! That's what I get for not checking the fine print. But if Beauty.cc is not a hoax, then Lot.cc must be worth a million also. I think Beauty.cc is a hoax and pure hype. If anyone knows something I don't about .ccTld. Please pass it on!

Hype or no hype... if there is a buyer out there who wants lot and does not care if its .com or .cc, sooner or later he will bite. I think what could ahve happened is that the buyer attempted to purchase beauty.com, but the seller probably asked for something around 5 million. The buyer then approached the next best (in the buyer's oppinion) looking and sounding alternative, .cc, and scooped it up for what he thought was a bargain 1 million. It could have also been a slap in the face of the beauty.com seller. We will never know the motive behind it, but one thing for sure, .com or no .com, 2 letters, 3 or 10, the buyer determines the price and the buyer will get the best of both the name and the price. To us beauty.cc may be way below beauty.com, but once again, to the average consumer, its all the same. Who is to say that in 10 years, .cc will not be worth twice that price? When did you know a good .com will fetch big bucks? 10 years ago? Dont think so.

As for people 'forgetting' .cc and typing in .com, think again. ALthough it can and does happen, people are not complete morons, and even if they do type .com instead of .cc by mistake, they will realize it once they see a different website and correct it to .cc You'd be surprised, what kind of crazy domain names i remember due to the fact that those websites offer exactly what i want.

All i was trying to say is that many people seem to follow the iron logic of 3 letters better then 4 and .com better then .net and so on, but the put a price tag of $10mil on a .com and $1mil on the same word .cc and you will be surprised how many people will take the later, provided they absolutely have to have that exact name.
