Search engine optimisation (SEO) is all about helping people find your website. This is much easier when you understand how they search for what they want. Using a keyword research tool and following up with keyword research tracking helps you determine which words internet surfers use when they look for information, services or products.

People have different personalities and perceptions, and you might be surprised which words or topics they consider to be most important. Being successful at brainstorming the different words and phrases people use to search for the products or services you offer will go a long way toward improving your search engine rankings.

Using a keyword research tool is a fundamental part of the keyword research process. In its most basic form, a keyword research tool provides data about the number of times a specific search is performed. Every keyword research tool works the same basic way: you type a word or phrase into a text box and the tool tells you how many times it was used in a search.

For example, if you enter the word “photography” into a keyword research tool, it will tell you that the word “photography” is used in a search a little over 507,000 times every month. It also supplies other terms containing the word photography, like “digital photography,” “wedding photography,” and so on, with monthly search counts for each.

If you want to try out a keyword research tool, there are several free ones to choose from. The “Overture” keyword research tool (now Yahoo Search Marketing, but still referred to by its former name) can be found at http://inventory.overture.com/. Google’s keyword research tool used to be available only to Adwords advertisers, but it can now be found at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. You can download a free keyword research tool called “Good Keywords” from http://www.goodkeywords.com/. For a more powerful keyword research tool, you may want to opt for purchase or membership. The most well-known membership keyword research tool is “Wordtracker” at http://www.wordtracker.com/. Wordtracker also has some keyword research tracking features and has a UK database which comes in handy for us people in the UK.

Http://www.KeywordDiscovery.com This tool is very similar to WordTracker in the advantages/disadvantages category. Better specification of keywords, lower pool of data to base them on. I personally prefer to use WordTracker and Keyword Discovery so I can compare the data files together and get a better average of the keyword being searched for.

Every keyword research tool provides information that appears to be precise and definitive. But you should always keep in mind that the results you get from any keyword research tool are only as accurate as the information on which it’s based. For example, Wordtracker relies heavily on Dogpile, a meta-search engine where only about one percent of all searches are performed. Overture’s keyword research tool compiles its results from searches on Yahoo. Even though about one in three searches are performed on Yahoo, you can’t always be sure that the demographics of Yahoo searchers are the same as your potential visitors. The bottom line on using a keyword research tool is that you should pay attention to the relative ranking of keyword usage without getting too concerned about the accuracy of monthly search numbers.

Using the results from a keyword research tool can help you improve your website’s search engine ranking. But to find out which keywords are most profitable, you also need to do keyword research tracking. Keyword research tracking is part of the wider field of web analytics’, which determines how visitors interact with your website. Keyword research tracking will tell you if different search terms are related to the way people interact with your website. You might also get ideas for even more possible keywords as a result of your keyword research tracking.

If you have an informational website and you simply want to determine which keyword resulted in the most visitors, then checking your website statistics might be as much keyword research tracking as you need to do. On the other hand, if you’re paying for keyword-based, pay-per-click advertising (PPC) (like Google Adwords), and keyword research tracking could make the difference between profit and loss. If certain keywords result in more sales compared to others, your keyword research tracking will bring it out.

Keyword research tracking can tell you which search engines are sending you the most visitors. Knowing this could help you decide where you’re most effective advertising could be done. Your keyword research tracking may also lead you to focus your efforts on a particular search engine to continue the flow of traffic or to try new strategies to balance your traffic sources. Your Organic SEO work will be much more efficient with keyword research tracking.
