My poor lil' puppy is sick

I have a 12 year old female lab, and she is the most wonderful old puppy you could ever want.

Last year she had a cancer scare, but she is ok now. It wasnt what I thought thank god.

And I know you are gonna think I am a wuss,...

But my poor puppy has an ear infection now and doesnt have a clue.

I like my dog and I dont like her hurting, especially at this age.

Gotta love labs. I've been taking care of my brother's dog and don't want to give her back. Not to sound cynical but why do all dogs get cancer? It seems like the only cause of death for dogs is cancer, at least from my experience.

Our puppy (90lb golden retriever/great pyrenees mix 13 months old and still growing) tumbled while playing and dislocated a knee on Saturday. The shrieking distress cries freaked us out. We had no idea what had happened.

Dogs are indeed special.

Yup, and this one doesnt even know she is a dog.
She thinks she's a human and just wants to hang out with everyone.

Vet gave us instructions...5 days of no romping, take outside on a leash, no jumping.

The humans are doing very good following these instructions.

Well, she is back from the vet, and all is good considering.

Apparently she has a pretty bad yeast infection in the ear, and it had been festering up to a couple of months producing a couple of fissures.
I feel terrible that I didnt even notice this as I am around her everyday, but it is being addressed now.

A topical ointment, and a couple of pills a day, and she should start feeling better tomorrow.

What I learned: Look in the ears alot more. Before I would just scratch them.

(I will sleep better tonight for sure)

This may be a little late but take her to a vet for some antibiotics. Also ask if tri-buffered aspirin will help with the pain and if she's itchy some anti-histamines will help (generic - I get 500 tablet packs for $5 at Sams / Costco).

I specifically addressed that question, and the vet said that there is some discussion that labs get this but it never fully goes away and resurfaces later as the same infection.

My 12 year old puppy has never had this before. We will see. At least I know whats going on now and how to treat it now.

Well things are really looking better. Her ear is really improved, but she as taken a dislike to the pills for some reason.
She started snacking them like a kid with candy, but now she just spits them out. Gotta do it the old fashioned way now.

Get some peanut butter and use it to give with the pills. They can not resist.
