Actually some groups (besides porn and music) still have good quality discussions, i.e. antispam group probably many others. Those good groups are probably moderated...

Actually there are few widely carried successful moderated newsgroups.

However, there are lots that haven't yet been infested by crossposting trolls, mostly technology orientated groups.
