it's amazing how many sites on the internet don't resolve unless you type the www. So ofen i just type the domain name and extension, and think the site is down. Then I enter www, and they are there. If only they knew.

Me too. In fact, just the other day I was thinking to myself, how much traffic I am likely losing to people typing in http://SUBDOMAIN.mydomain.com, because my host ev1servers does not support wildcarded dns. Therefore, all that subdomain traffic is being redirected by my host to a 404 page. Ain't that a shame. Thanks DCG, and I do look forward to your tools and expertise.

It made me a lot of money by finding out my wildcards and 404 pages were not redirecting on certain domains.

ok, here is my example:

sorry in advance webcat:

Domain Name : SongClick.com
Without WWW : http://SongClick.com
With WWW : http://www.SongClick.com
With WildCards : Wrong DNS / No Entry / Not Pointed
404 Page : Wrong DNS / No Entry / Not Pointed
IP Address : 64.202.167.129
DNS Name Server : PARK9.SECURESERVER.NET

This result shows me 2 errors on webcats domain songclick.com

If I type in my browser: songs.songclick.com it will fail because wildcards are not setup correctly in the dns server. If it was, and I type that in, I would get forwarded to the actual site songclick.com

Now the 404 page: If I typed: songclick.com/ffffffff , where f could be any non existant page, it will give an error, If it was setup right in apache/web server, it would forward me to the website songclick.com.

So much traffic being wasted.

No apology necessary! SongClick.com is being developed into the replacement for mp3.com!

But for now? It's parked at godaddy! Since it not pointed, there's no htaccess for 404 intercept. I suppose I should at least get it to my server! Doh!

Except for "www" which has been the conventional sub-domain used for the web, WHY would anybody type in e.g. stupid.dnforum.com or silly.dnforum.com? Unless it's something that was set up by the previous owner, I don't think you have lost too much traffic, if any at all.
