Let's say you're starting a new business venture and want to hand register a domain name. If given the choice between keyword1-keyword2.com or keyword1keyword2.net, which do you take? Is it worth having to emphasize that your name has the dash in it to customers (i.e. "keyword1 DASH keyword2 dot com") or do you feel it would be better to use the .net namespace?

you don't want to start a venture on .NET and then work to build up traffic that bleeds to the .com
and it's pretty much same scenario, if you build on a hyphen.
maybe try an alternative keyword or synonym, or even add a third word that would could further define your venture, in .com
you can also try to acquire the .com that's in your way, from the owner.
