What happens if a person tries to charge your paypal master card and you have no money in the account. Do they automatically take it from your bank account or is the transaction denied?

I have this setup on my pay pal and if i have run out of funds on my mastercard it takes it from my bank account. i have a direct debit setup with them as i have a business account so the payments are selected automaticly due to the funds on each account. not sure about personal pay pal accounts tho?
