I am always amazed at the new domain registrations based on someone elses nightmare. These .info's were regged yesterday after the shooting.

disgusting...

I am not surprised! Some people have no morals.

ok, who is behind choseunghui.com??? that person seems to have regged all extensions!

Anyways i dont think anyone who takes advantage of this situation is any less sick than the person who takes advantage of a hard working business to buy its typos or other extensions.

Too close to home, I have turned off the TV's, ignor the news, changed my home page when I sign on, and will stop reading about it. I am afraid my family and I will know some of the victims and their families. Hopeful this will not be the case but very popular school for many local athletes and science and math whizzes.

Been waiting for my mother to call with some updates. Maybe that won't come.

its horrible when ppl try to make money of this kind of tragedy

I fail to see the difference between this and news networks playing out stories like this for months as opposed to providing legitimate news.

How long did CNN and Fox News play the michael jackson molestation trial non-stop? the oj murder trial? the natalee holloway missing story?

If you're going to complain a few people are taking advantage of a NEWS STORY to make MONEY, at least put it in context to what professional, longstanding news corporations do EVERYDAY of the year.

I think the one thing that people fail to realize is that this affects many more lives than just the 33 dead. Family, friends, classmates.

And like my co-worker who I just spoke to. She just returned from VT campus. Her son lives in the dorm where the first shootings took place.

Her daughter called early yesterday morning and told her mother not to freak out if she heard the news about a shooting in the dorm where Ken lives. She said he is okay but the dorm is in "lock down". She told her mother she would talk to her latet.

She went to class like most of the student population did. Her class was in a building across from where the main massacre took place. They heard pop, pop, pop, had no idea what was going on, looked out and saw people jumping out of windows. The pop, pop, pop sound continued. I think it takes awhile for the brain to comprehend what the eyes are seeing.

This was one of the classes where the professor told his students to jump. He tried to hold the door shut. He was shot and killed. So were the last two students who tried to get out of the windows, but not in time.

Their mother came here to talk, to be consoled I presume. She wasn't scheduled to work so I guess that is why she was here just chit-chatting. Perhaps she needed to be around friends and co-workers before she went home. She had an exhausting day, spent time with her kids, and got to see Pres. Bush.

If you're going to complain a few people are taking advantage of a NEWS STORY to make MONEY, at least put it in context to what professional, longstanding news corporations do EVERYDAY of the year.
That is their job. To report the news.

How this compares to the three trials or cases mentioned is not even in the same league.

Regging names to capitalize on events like this is not our job. It is our choice. But it certainly does not add credibility or validate our decision making. If someone wants to set up a memorial, site then so be it. But when the offer is to either set up a memorial site or sell it, that dulls the senses to the core.

I'll ask Carol if she and her children would like to buy this name so they can never put this ordeal behind them.

I am in the same boat Doc Com. I too have many friend that go there. Many I have heard from, but some not. Its hard watching the news, and hearing these reporters talk about how the campus is to blame for all this. I am mad at one person, and one person only... and that is the shooter. Fingers can be pointed later. We can only hope for the best.

I know who the owner is - he has good intentions.

Registering domain names that can make a profit, I think many would argue, is PRECISELY what many folks here do for a living. I think that qualifies as a job, no?

While you're checking to see if she wants to buy a domain that might make a few hundred bucks and get seen by a few thousand people, ask if she wants to watch national news in the next 6 months, which I THINK has a slightly bigger audience. Guess what's gonna be on until a fresh shocking -not to mention money making- story comes along to take it's place? That's right, RERUNS of the tragedy over and over with 100's of different "experts" paraded on to give their opinions of who's to blame and how things could have gone differently.

This story is NEWS, yes... yesterday. Granted new facts worthy of national attention will come out in the next few days. After that it'll be the same rehashed stories for months on end. You know why they're rehashing those stories 24/7? To make *GASP* money, because people tune in and watch shocking stories. How is that in any way different from someone who buys a domain to make money on a current event?

I don't think whoever did that is evil or malicious. Opportunistic and capitalistic, not evil.

I think this has to do more with ones ethics and personal values. Personally, i would have trouble sleeping at night profiting from VirginiaTech, 911, or any other tragedy.

Sounds like you are trying to validate and justify all of this to yourself.

If you can't see beyond the buck, then there is something deeper. People that deal with this on a personal and emotional level don't need bullshit domains thrust in their face.

Do tell, seeing that you have Michigan in your avatar, without looking it up or googling it, where and when was the most students ever killed in one mass attack. Reg the heck out of that seeing that most of those survivors and parents are long gone. Make a name for your self with a historical site. That is opportunistic and capitalistic.

Deal with your own issues. I have patients to see.

I guess you aren't a news journalist or publisher.

It's interesting to see how mainstream news media, firmly planted in the old-fashioned offline print/TV/radio tradition, suggest it is questionable to monetize a domain name related to a tragedy.

Interestingly, I don't see these journalists ask the same questions about monetizing the same tragedy through massive advertising sales for print/tv/radio media. Or getting paid a salary for reporting.

Obviously, it's because these journalists and publishers make money on tragedies entirely by accident (sic), while they are all providing a public service. Domain investors, on the other hand, are a greedy bunch of cynical speculators...

Do the newspapers give away their papers out of respect for the families? Do the television news give their sponsors a break in cost for a commercial out of respect for the families. But I guess "Emergency in the Er" and other like shows wouldn't exist if we the consumer didn't feed off such tragedy. Is it really surprising that one would try to capitalize the way these corporations do when a tragedy strikes? Give the moral issue a break it really is tiring; or go out and picket a major news organization for making money off of these stories.
