"Previous allowance count withdrawn"?

The USPTO is processing a trademark request. It was approved for publication by the examining attorney, but then withdrawn from publication and now shows this message:

"Previous allowance count withdrawn"

I would greatly appreciate any light that anyone can shed on this. Is the trademark request dead or just publication delayed? Thanks.

Typically, the application was allowed for publication, and then either the Examining Attorney or his/her supervisor found an error in the application or some basis for an initial refusal. So, they withdrew the allowance count and you will see an initial refusal shortly.

Is there any on-line way to protest a TM application, or do you have to do paperwork?

Currently the only online form available from the PTO is the First Extension of Time to Oppose (30 days)

You have to do paperwork, pay the fee, conduct discovery, depose witnesses, file briefs, and hold a trial before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. No, you can't do that online.
