what does it cost to run per month?

I run the site on my own server. It uses very little disc space, and only around 5GB bandwidth per month. You could probably find a host for $5 a month for this.

Why only six months?

Six months is a long time. I see many people selling developed sites who only offer 1-2 months for links. 6 months is plenty of time for you to set up new link exchanges.

No, they are volunteers. I had to reject a fair amount of potential staff too as they weren't needed - there is no shortage of help on offer.
