It's usually not luck. Most common is snapnames, just know that if the name is pending delete, there are many speculators willing to pay top $ when that domain drops.
Droplists.net, which is free for plat members on dnforum is sometimes usefull, but it's nearly impossible to get a dropped ovt domain, and fewer and fewer linkpop names are dropping as well.
