Should/shouldn't I move to California?

I'm considering a move to San Fran within the next 6 - 9 months for a 1yr program. My other choice is NYC. I'm leaning towards San Fran though. Any San Fran/Cali residents care to give unbiased feedback of life in this city or state? Opinions also welcome from those who no longer live in the state but may have resided there for 6 months - 1 yr.

I never resided there but I would pick NYC. The only REAL city in the USA. The rest of what is perceived as "cities" are in fact just big villages (LA, SF etc).
