I don't understand why people prefer snapping
over buying. I had the domain alkyl.com
advertised for sale for a year, had a $5
ebay auction (with no result).
Now that it is in redemption period, someone
immediately put a snap on it. Are there
snap-bots at work?

imho, its the thrill of panning for possible nuggets as the mud rushes downhill

People are afraid to approach the owner as this could alert him of interest and the cost could skyrocket arbitrarily (read ridiculously).

I believe WLS will change all this dramatically.

That may be true, I have also contacted some domain owners whos domain will expire and then the buyer renews it and ask $500+ for it.
