I use it at times. Seems like a good way to spam mass audiences (followers). Even Obama is an active tweeter. A successful, strategic move on his part was to actively tweet from the campaign trail.

Follow me if you wish. I may follow you but can't guarantee I will stay your follower. When I login I like to read interesting tweets not affiliate, spammy junk.

Twitter can be a great way to drive traffic and gain exposure. Self promotion on twitter is effective as long as it is original and it's a good way to network by seeing what your friends, colleagues are up to.
