Internet's root servers separated
By Nick Farrell [08-11-2002]
Discrete locations will improve resistance to attack
Two servers at the heart of the world's internet traffic have been separated in an attempt to increase resistance to hacker attacks.
VeriSign has moved one of its two 'root' servers that act as a directory for online addresses from one of its northern Virginia offices to another.

A spokesman said that the servers are also separated electronically and assigned different network addresses.

According to news agency Reuters, the move should provide greater resistance to denial of service attacks like those launched two weeks ago which temporarily disabled nine of the 13 root servers.

Although the move had been planned for months before the attacks, VeriSign had to wait for approval for the move. None of the other root servers share a physical or virtual location.
