Hello,
Uploadââ¬â¢r is a relatively new project incorporating a file upload and URL shortening service. Unfortunately I donââ¬â¢t have the time to promote the site so I have decided to sell it. I can foresee it becoming extremely popular if marketed correctly. It is powered by a custom script so is not a turnkey product.
Features: File uploading
Current limit of 25MB per file.
Files are automatically removed after 24 hours of inactivity. In other words, popular files remain on the server longer. Unpopular files (i.e. those which have not been downloaded within 24 hours) are deleted to ensure there are no disk space shortages.
If a user tries to download an image, it is displayed straight away (useful for hotlinking to signatures, eBay listings etc). Otherwise they are forwarded to an information page outlining what the file is they are about to download, with the option of e-mailing a link for the file to a friend or to disable the link (useful to block copyrighted content). The page also encourages users to check for viruses before opening files.
All file types are accepted to be uploaded, however files which could cause server security issues such as PHP files or executables are automatically zipped, therefore ensuring the content cannot be executed on the server; thus avoiding damage while ensuring maximum convenience to the users.
All of the above settings (file size limit, duration of inactivity before files are removed, the content of the message used when e-mailing links to friends and the restricted file types) are all customizable through an easy to use admin panel.
A progress bar is also present during a file upload showing how much has been transferred (in KB), the percent finished, the total time of the upload and the estimated time remaining.
Features: URL shortening
Shortens a really long URL into a much smaller one, useful for e-mailing links to friends (as long URLs often get cut up) or writing down (or verbally dictating) for friends. An example would be to shrink http://www.myfreewebspaceprovider.com/users/~j.bloggs123/index.htm to http://url.uploadr.com/5 - the latter being much easier to remember.
These short URLs do not expire after a set duration, however they can be disabled via the admin panel in the event of disputes.
Requirements
The site is currently hosted and working fine on a Linux server running PHP 4, MySQL and Perl. Subdomains are active on the site as all shortened URLs begin with the http://url.uploadr.com prefix whereas uploaded files begin with the http://file.uploadr.com prefix.
Overall
The site also includes detailed terms and conditions to deal with legal issues and could become very successful if correctly marketed. It is powered by a custom script so it is not a turnkey product in any way, and there will be no site with an identical backend system.
