.us names

I haven't been in the domain game for all that long (few months) but I was wondering if only people in the US can register .us names?

I'm guessing yes from all that I've seen.

I like this extension but am sad I most likely can't register any. :cry:

No,

Anyone can register a .US domain. You just have to set some Nexus properties to the domain. But that shouldn't pose a barrier.

You are supposed to have US Nexus. Basically this mean either be a US Citizen, have some business in the US, or some other real tie to the US. here is the basic part of the policy:

U.S. NEXUS REQUIREMENT

To be in compliance with the U.S. Nexus Requirement, all registrants for the .US domain must be either:

1. A natural person (i) who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America or any of its possessions or territories, or (ii) whose primary place of domicile is in the United States of America or any of its possessions, or

2. An entity or organization that is (i) incorporated within one of the fifty (50) U.S. states, the District of Columbia, or any of the United States possessions or territories or (ii) organized or otherwise constituted under the laws of a state of the United States of America, the District of Columbia or any of its possessions or territories, or

3. An entity or organization (including a federal, state, or local government of the United States, or a political subdivision thereof) that has a bona fide presence in the United States.

Technically, I think no. You would need to form a business of some sort such as a corporation or LLC. You can form one just to own the domain for probably less than $100 in some states. The caveat is that you are then subject to state and US tax and other laws.

You could however, have a US citizen "legally" own the domain with you having contol through a leasing arrangement.
