USB Problems

Question for you hardware guys/gals out there ...

My printer (USB connection) worked great until a few weeks back, the system didn't recognize it anymore. Yesterday, tried to hook up a new mouse (USB) ... same thing.

If anyone could give me ideas on how to diagnose whether it is a hardware or software issue, I'd be very appreciative.
