Value of 3g domains?

Most of us know around 2-3 years ago 3g related names were being called goldmine by many domainers on old afternic. A few 3g related domains were also bought and sold on old afternic or that is what the old afternic was showing in its sales stats last March when most of us last went there. It is also well known that 3g technology has failed to take off like it was projected some 3 years ago but I still find that most of the 3g related domains with .com and .net exptensions (and may be .org also) are still taken but not being used (are parked or don't resolve).

Are the 3g domains still worth the registration money particularly the 2nd tier .net and .org names? How long before one can expect to see the market for some of the better domains emerge? It will be interesting to know the opinions of fellow domainers.

What is their value in commerce? What traffic do they get? What can be sold there? What is their branding capability?

The fact that they were ballyhooed on Afternic is a good clue..

Personally, I think it is a good idea to keep as diverse a portfolio as possible and it does not hurt to maintain 1 or 2 simple, short, generic 3G dot-coms... if you have them.

3G is still alive. There is news everyday.

IMO all 3g names. I had a few before but let them drop. What will happen when 4g and 5g come out?

I sold 3gnetwork.net which was ranked as a top domain on sedo.... for $20

However, price wasn't anything since I sold it to someone I knew from another forum.

Do not agree at all, though I admit their perceived value is less than the yr 2000 when 3G names were at their peak.

Don't worry about 4G making 3G obsolete anytime soon, as 3G high speed technology should be strong for as long as 10 yrs. 4g may not roll out for 10 or more yrs from what I understand.

I have received a few sale inquiries on 1 of my 3G names. Plus, one of my 3G names (not the one with the inquiries) gets really good traffic, believed to be mostly type ins.

That 3G website has a Google PR of zero and no worthwhile links yet it gets between 300 to 400 index page hits a week fairly consistently now. I consider that to be very good traffic for most small websites such as that one. I don't see how it could get that traffic other than type-ins, which even surprises me but do not know for sure the source of the traffic. Any ideas here on how to determine that?

For some odd reason the traffic picked up starting about 2 mos ago, perhaps because the keyword phrase became more popular for type ins as 3G gets closer to widespread usage.

I am sure 3G will eventually get popular. Billions of dollars have been spent by giant phone firms on 3G thus far and once technical problems are ironed out it should be big in a few yrs.

Some of my 3g domains get abount 8-15 hits a day. They are not listed on any search engine. Right now I have a "for sale" page up for them but there have been no queries from prospective buyers. So I guess, its going to be wait and watch game.

True, and many billions more to promote their own brands, such as:

Verizon
QualComm
Excel
Nokia
Cingular
Motorola
etc.. etc..

NOBODY is spending anything to re-brand as "3G" anything..

The companies have kept their money in their existing brands. Motorola started out selling car radios many decades ago. Why not chuck their brand for the latest and greatest? They have too much invested in it!

Intel is another example. 286/ 386/ 486 meant losing investment and dubious trademark protection. Hence, Pentium. They invested so much in the Pentium brand that they kept the name, even for successive generations of chips..

Thanks but I was asking how to tell it was a direct type-in by looking at the log? What does a direct type-in look like?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this. I have not looked at server logs but only used hit counters like MS FastCounter which do not reveal the source of hits.
