ok i know this probably sounds like a complete newbie question to most of you but what exactly is link popularity and were does it come from. for example what does it mean when my 'domain checker' tells me a domain has a link pop of 10? where does it get these details from?

It means that there are 10 sites/pages linking to the domain. You can find this through individual search engines or using a service like Marketleap.
