Why are [img] tags disabled?

Is there any reason as to why the tags aren't allowed?

Embedding images within the post is so much more convenient.

I agree, I know it could be abused but surely we could be given something, afterall we paid for membership, they could punish any abuse with a loss of account.

It's a privacy issue -- you'd be revealing the IP address of all people who read that thread to whoever hosts the image.

It's also a great way to spread exploits of browser bugs, e.g. if certain malformed images (GIF/PNG/JPEG) trigger a buffer overflow, etc.

Pageload time would also increase.

Thankfully, users can disable viewing of images through the vBulletin user options (which I just did for myself, in case posting of them is permitted).
