Why do people buy scratch-offs?

I love scratch offs....I play every week just for fun of it and maybe just maybe I might hit the big one.

The odds at winning in scratch-offs and the lottery in general is so low that I'd rather just take that money and use it to make my own destiny rather than rely on a game of chance to do it for me.

the majority of people who play things have no other chance to get 'rich'. Getting luck on some lottery is the only way but you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning.

I don't play these things either.. But 2 years ago my sister-in-law won the cash for life scratch off.

She gets a $5k check every month for 20 years.. Tax-free in Canada.

She could have had the one-lump sum up front but elected to go with the monthly payout.. I was one of the ones telling her to take the lump sum upfront, for the obvious reasons that she could turn that million $ into a hell of a lot more.

Thanks for sharing that first hand info. I thought nobody would be stupid enough to do that (taking monthly cheques instead of a lump sum right away).

Paycheck mentality... but when you think of it so many people don't seize the opportunities they are given. C'est la vie

When I was 14 my dad won 1st and 2nd prize in a raffle, and someone dropped off 80 scratch its when just me and my brother were home.

We decided it'd be fine to scratch just 10 of them ourselves and mum would be wrapped when she got home with the remaining 70, (dad was overseas). So 80 scratch its later we made $13 each, only 2 tickets were missing after a final count, so I thought no problem, only later did I realise my brother probably pocketed 2 winning tickets for himself. Had a lot of fun, with so many tickets you think you're certain to win $50,000.
