Why .US will Succeed

KidKool made an interesting observation about the number of new .US sites he is seeing, especially from teen webmasters. That is something to take note of. Teens can't afford good .com names so they are adopting .US (speaking of American teens of course). As they move into their early 20's they will be the influential new webmasters with no bias at all against the new extension (as they will have grown up with it).

The new generation is always the one that sets new trends and market changes in motion. Most people in my generation would rather listen to someone scratching their nails on a blackboard for 3 minutes than listen to a rap song. That didn't stop rap and hip hop from topping the music charts. .US will become a very popular TLD - The upcoming generation gaurantees it - and there is nothing you can do to stop it. If you can't beat them, you would be wise to join them.

In Australia, people trust a .com.au site, moreso than a .com, generally speaking. I hope this will be the case with .us - if the requirements for obtaining a .us domain are strictly adhered to I guess this will end up happening..

Duke, wait until congress OK,s the the .Kids.US ..you'll really see the explosion then ..IMO..

these kids will have .us "imprinted" in their social fabric.. as they get older ..they will want to be an "adult" they'll drop the .Kids part and go straight for the .US because thats where the "big" kids are.the cool people.. how ever you want to word it..

Kidkools right..teen market is already discovering .US ..and you can bet the younger siblings are watching..they 'll "have" to have it a .US address..

BTW..with the conservative republicans gaining complete control of the senate , house and presidency..it will happen soner than later..

I see .Kids.US being a compromise.. hell half the republicans are so conservative they'd just as soon see the internet collapse (because of all the "filth") ..and half the democrats are so far liberal they want it to be wide open for the kids..

Filtering just dosent work..it either filters too much or not enough depending on which side you are on..

The best way out for both sides to claim victory is to claim that they helped push forward legislation that helped create a safe zone on the internet for KIDS.. for your kids ..

Now thats a politition middle america..hell all of america could vote for ..correct !

I agree that the .kids.us will have a dramatic impact on the .us registrations.

I'm not into the political crap, but I do know that Republican = Big money. Big money has tried to slow down the internet for as long as I've been around these parts. (10 years) I've seen in my industry (financial) where the brokerages have tried to put an anchor on the web for years, initially barring email by brokers etc.

They are dinosaurs with 100s of millions in hardware that they have to replace every 18 months cause things are moving too fast for them. They don't like these small techies beating them with low cost new technology.

That's my worry for the .us ccTLD. If Big money is in charge, they want to slow it all down until they can get their hands around it and control it. They still have some control now but are losing their grip.

Then again, as you mention above, they have to listen to their voters who also are pro morals and want a kidsafe zone.

At least I'm with them on that part. I'd love to see the us ccTLD take off and wouldn't mind at all pushing all the porn stuff to an XXX extension and crushing the porno .com market.

It would be tough for them to grab traveltips.com since it was reg'd 7 yrs ago, has expired now but already has a Snap on it.

Yes, but it would make better sense and help the .us name more to simply use those webpages to make a real .us site.

I noticed that a lot of blog writers were using .net domains for personal sites because of the shortage of .coms. How much has this affected the uptake of .nets, it's analogous to the .us situation.

Maybe it shows that somebody there has a clue, unlike some other governmental and nonprofit entities that are too ignorant to understand how silly it is to use an address connoting commerciality for a noncommercial site.

.gov and .us make reasonable sense for an official U.S. government site. .info would also make sense if it's an informational site.

Many "geeky" types have long preferred .org for personal sites because of its connotations of noncommerciality, though now more options exist like .name and .info. The hardcore geeks never liked .net for this use because they're not network providers!

The owner of blog.us has made subdomains of this available for bloggers. That is a reasonable naming structure for U.S.-based blogs, kind of parallel to kids.us, but not requiring an act of Congress!
