Ok, even though Ive got some experience, I need some guidance: How come a lot of people register domains like www.wwwcnn.com? Why would you include the "www" after the first "."?

I understand it obviously has something to do with typos, but is it for mistypes that forget to type in the first "."??

Thats the only way I can see it resolving, unless I'm totally missing something.

I think by now, a lot of people don't even use the initial "www" thereby reducing those possible mis-type ins, and the rest of the world has become pretty adept at the initial "www."

Thoughts please??

You are correct. Believe it or not, people still type www dot domain.

Remember, there are seasoned internet users, and there are new people coming onto the net everyday.

Edit- looks like you already realize it's for typos. That's really all there is to it.

I've noticed a lot of people registering www-domain.com, now a dash is far away from the dot (on the keyboard). What is the logic behind this one? Look at www-travel.com, for example. All the extensions are taken.

this is due to the different keyboard layout for different countries. www-domain.de is a very common typo in germany as the "-" is located next to the "."
