I got curious about something today. I was doing some research and checking names for availability and thinking about the string of letters xxx for meaning for 'adult'. I was positive that xxxx.com would be regged as we'll as xxxxx.com. I wondered if xxxxxx.com (6 Xs') and of course it was too. And at this point my curiosity got really piqued because i asked myself how far would someone go to have xxxxxxx.....com regged? :?:

wait till you hear this. xxxxxxxx.com(8) regged. xxxxxxxxxxxx.com(12) regged. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com(15) regged.

now i was getting really interested. I began to copy and past xxxxx in groups of 5. xxxxxx.....com(20) regged. xxxxxxx....com(25) regged. At this point I'm starting to get hysterical with laughter. Its all the same guy!!

so now i start copy/pasting in groups of 10. xxxxxx......com(50) REGGED!!!

same guy!! xxxxxx.....com(60) regged! well after this i'm not sure because at 70 x's i was not getting results so he must have ended sometime after 60.

so this one guy had regged every combo from xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com all the way up to xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com :lol:

well its at least 44 renewals. depending what you pay its about $350 ballpark i guess.

btw, is there a limit to the possible length of a domain name? I wonder if this guy would have just kept regging if he could, but for maybe verisign has set some kind of upper limit at like 65 characters? lol

the limit is 63 characters.

I believe such names do get traffic, albeit very untargeted. Bored surfers tend to type in random letters into the address bar, though I wouldn't go as far as 60 characters. There has to be pretty decent traffic until 10 characters
