The Hutu are the major ethnic group in both Rwanda and Burundi; they make up the vast majority of the population in both countries.
The term "Hutu" is well-known worldwide because of tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were killed in violence, mainly between Hutus and Tutsis, in the early and mid 1990s, as famously shown in the movie The Hotel Rwanda.
