1and1 Warning Buyer beware

I just received a call from a debt collector calling on behalf of 1and1 on some domains I let expire. I even went into their screwed up control panel and canceled the renewals beforehand. Needless to say the debt collector got a nice little Go F*ck Yourself followed shortly thereafter by a dial tone.

This has been discussed a lot in the past.

At 1and1.com you are not paying for the domain name per se, which they say is included free in your "package." Since the name is free they say you still need to pay the yearly fee unless you cancel the package too (but the package is tricky to cancel I have found out).

You pay for a 'package' per year regardless of there being a domain there or no domain. They still charge the yearly fee. I believe Yahoo has also adopted a similar business model which includes an optional domain reg and you are charged regardess of the name being in or not in the package.

They are probably allowed to do that in the TOS. They have done that to many other domainers for years.

The collection agency may report you to the credit bureau and hurt your credit score, which sucks of course and could easily cost you a lot more than the amount due in higher interest rates in the future.

I had the least issues (please note: I still had issues) if I canceled (or transferred) them TWO months in advance. I know, it sucks. You'll get the emails and confirm, confirm, and confirm. Their cancellation procedure is the most complicated I've seen (the only one where you need to go to a separate site just to cancel them).

Yahoo is that way - They charge $35.00

I have too many names at Yahoo that I do not want to keep.
May be I need to take few days off to work on those puppies

may need to hire some one to help me with taking care of those.

yet another victim of 1and1.con. I am stuck in a few contracts with them because apparently EVERY TIME YOU CLICK YOU ENTER INTO A CONTRACT. They were nice enough to cancel 6 of my erroneous orders. WORST COMPANY EVER

I haven't worked with 1&1 for three plus years. They are really BAD! no customer support! Please don't let me talk about Yahoo's business practice for renewals! I transferred some domains to GoDaddy and they still charged me! $30 plus for domain name? What a joke! Go with the Best! GoDaddy has the best customer service out there!
