My wife and I watched a show today on the theory that the government is using jet contrails (the "after burn" streaks you'll see in the sky from a jet that look like clouds) to alter the weather patterns and/or environment (including to combat global warming). This is also called "Chemtrails".

There is also a rumored project that the government is actively pursuing using chemicals like silver iodide (or silver oxide?) to reflect sunlight back into space (to cool the planet down) and sulfur to block the sun's rays 9similar to a volcano's eruption). The name of the project is Aerial Obscuration (970 Google hits for those two in quotes) and there was some evidence on the show to show that military aircraft are a part of this but they could not prove if commercial jetliners were also part of this.
