A few general questions,

1. How much time a domain name usually takes from its expiry date to the start of redemption period? Is there any grace period between expiry and redemption period?

2. Does a domain name in redemption period necessarily have to be ultimately deleted, if not renewed ?

3. Why do certain names go into redemption period even before their expiry period is over?

4. Can one make DNS changes to a name after the expiry period?

1. This depends upon the registrar. Whenever the registrar deletes the name, it goes into redemption period at the registry level. The time it takes for a domain to go into redemption period after the expiration date ranges from immediately to never (it varies by registrar).

2. No. That's why it is called "redemption period". The owner can get the domain back during this period of time, but it costs much more than ordinary registration fee.

3. Domains can be deleted for many reasons such as invalid contact info or credit card fraud even if the domain is not expired.

4. Depends on the registrar.

Actually, Yes it does.
If not "Redeemed" by the owner, the name will automatically be put into "PENDINGDELETE" status at the end of the "REDEMPTIONPERIOD". Remember, the REGISTRAR had to send the "DELETE" command to the REGISTRY in order for the name to enter the "REDEMPTIONPERIOD" in the first place.

After that command is sent, it is out of the REGISTRAR's hands unless the send and explicit command for REDEMTION.

I'm watching a domain that went from "REDEMPTIONPERIOD", to "active", yet the domain wasn't renewed. It expired several months ago. I wonder if it will eventually just go straight into PENDINGDELETE or go through the REDEMPTIONPERIOD again.
