i currently have a domain backorder on godaddy ... and when i checked on the domain it was in afternic auction (but has not started) there has been no preorders... if no one preorders does that mean the auction will not happen? now if that happens and no one bids and the auction expires does that mean it will expire and be ready for backorder?

Where is the name registered at ? Is the name expired now ? Looks like a prerelease.
I know that tucows for instance now send their expired names to afternic (those that they don't keep to themselves). If no bids are received then yes the name would be dropped.

it is registered at tucows... and it expired but i think it is under the grace period before the end of the actual drop of the name for anybody to register it... i have had it backorder for quite sometime now for about 8-9 months ... and if no one else backordered before me on this name does this mean i would get it... or how does that work?

It would work like this:
Domain expires. It is provisionally renewed with the registry. Registrar attempts to sell the name. If it receives no bids the registrars sends the name to redemption and recovers the renewal fee from verisign, if the name is eventually dropped within 45 days from expiry date.

I would place a preorder at afternic.
If you wait for the domain to drop you could have competition as well.
