Alexa has always been unreliable, especially with the proliferation of mobile devices. The news of changing their methodology coincided with global plunging of Alexa rankings. I doubt it has to do with "fudging" the numbers per this or that political direction, however. For reliable traffic stats Google Analytics is a must.

Alexa is a joke, download the tool bar and refresh your page several times or so and you'll have a nice ranking by next week
