I've always used domaintools for whois searches, but now they just signpost you to godaddy's whois.

What 'safe' alternatives do you use?

Hmm... Domaintools works the same for me as it always has... is it different if you're not logged in?

Safest otherwise - just use raw whois directly from the shell account for any web host you have. (Provided they offer shell access.)

It's working normally now - I was getting a (non-clickable) link to godaddy whois previously despite being logged in all the while. Maybe they were trying something.

Thanks guys - think I've got to the bottom of it - it seems to apply when the domain is offered as a premium via godaddy. Domaintools must be on a percentage.

Edit:

Not the case for all - this is what comes up;

Server response:
Registrant:
Domains by Proxy, Inc.

Domain Name: XXXXXX.COM

Domain servers in listed order:
NS.RACKSPACE.COM
NS2.RACKSPACE.COM

For complete domain details go to:
http://who.godaddy.com/whoischeck.aspx?Domain=XXXXXX.COM

(the domain wasn't xxxxxx.com)
