I run a few WP based sites, so out of interest, how is this plugin better than say WP-Affiliate or Smartads?

This plugin demo you can see it on the page itself. It will allow you to post amazon products right into the blog posts.

How it is better that I don't know because I haven't used the one that you are mentioning.
