Anyone know anything about the American Navy?

Is there anyone here with particular knowledge of the American Navy who can help with a quiz question?

The question is: Who was the father of the American Navy?

The answers I get from the web seem to be fairly equally divided between John Barry and John Paul Jones. Has anyone got a definitive answer?

Ha! Thanks for those replies, only not sure I'm any clearer. Most quiz books give John Barry, but I had always heard John Paul Jones. And the link giving credit to neither of them but to those who went before makes things more confusing. But thanks for all the replies, guys. I guess if I'm running a quiz I'd better steer clear of this one.
