I think that on the whole, appraisals are a waste of time as a domain name is only worth what someone will pay for it - no more and no less. Anyone have any other views on this?

Personally, I just like the "Yes" I like it ! or the "No" I don't like it !
I also like a little depth on why "Yes" and why "No"

Provided that you could get an unbiased sensible response which in the majority of cases does not happen.

Sometimes you will get "0" with no backup as to why, put these people on your ignore list, they are a waste of your time.

These extensions are worthless with nothing to back it up, off to the ignore list!

There are however some very sensible appraisers with open minds thet are not stuck in the past. It will not take long to determine who they are. Listen and learn, that's what I try do do.

With respect to a name only being worth what somebody is prepared to pay.
That is fairly correct and applies to most things, however the real sales people here will know that in many cases a potential buyer does not know that they need your product until you point it out to them and the benefits associated with it.

This is the reason you see so few sales via the "domain sites" apart from resellers.

If you think you have a good name by all means ask for others opinions, then identify your targets and market, market, market!

The most useful think about appraisals should be the feedback on potential uses, or the problems arising from the misuse of english.

For example I registered swopnames.com, and then realised that the incorrect swap is more common on the net. I also got some hits from girlcentre.com when it was aliased, but again, the mis-spelt center is much more common and therefore more valuable.

It is also useful to have alternative meanings pointed out to you - Words like "dom" for example.

Unfortunately multiple threads by a few members, and the unqualified $0 values, which are presumably made for the DN$s rather than an attempt to be helpful, tend to drive many threads off the board fairly quickly. This reduces the value of the sub-forum.

I don't think they're a "waste of time" at all. We need more people to take the time to do them here, in my opinion. If I 'earn a DNF Buck or two, I think that's fair ... as, generally, I (and most people) always try to leave some constructive comments and/or money-saving strategies for the poster.
This is all at a cost to the user/appraisal-seeker of $0.00. Sometimes, you DO get what you pay for! :)
Take care.

waste of time?

They are useful for starting points.. for rough drafts if you will.. from there you add on all the variablles..

Hopefully with a large group as on the DNforum you get a more reflect price range because with this many members you get a wide range of variable from the wide points of knowledge..

including people in the sector/industry for a domain you have.

People of nearly all countries, cultures and religions..that cover a wider range of perspectives on how a domain may be view

Sales of previous domain's of similiar qualities, including extensions, size of domain etc..

And the knowledge of MANY people who have collectively sold millions of dollars of domains.

The problem is not so much are appraisals useful or not.. it's a matter of WHO 's appraisals you are listening too..

And yes, above everything else the bottom line is what you are willing to accept for a domaincampared to any offers you may receive.

depends on the appraisal company

new idea in appraisals ON-LINE lookups at

http://www.domainnameappraisals.us

so a DN seller can link auctions and such to the database there

it has a high/low/wholesale value

now, some here put values on things like character lenght etc

some are good

most don't take into accout the PCV or Potential Commercial Value

there's a new book about DN buying/selling/trading that gives pretty good guidelines for how to determine PCV that most in this forum don't use

agreed, any DN is only worth what someone will pay for it

however, some major industries will pay for creative domains using hyphens, and other things like i/e/1/247 etc

so, for simple characters, the models used in this forum are helpful

however, most here don't really understand the PCV values

bottom line is the marketing to potential end users that really gets good bucks for any domain

RIP STS 107 crew

I enjoy hearing what others think about the names I reg. I usually get the same responce or nothing at all. The thing that I dont like is that many like to get appraisals but few like to give them, its always the same people providing feeback while others just request it and move on.

You should keep in mind as well that many of the $0 appraisals are accurate. Just because SOMEBODY regg'ed a domain, doesn't mean it has any value. All it means is that it ONCE had some value to one person.

It is not the best ettiquette to hit an appraisal thread with a $0 and run away, but it is still the opinion of a (hopefully) experienced domainer who presumably has had some unpleasant experience trying to unload similar worthless domains.

For most of the dogs that are posted here (usually by newbies) the harsh reality is a bitter pill, but one that should be beneficial to them in the long term.

Sorry, but I just had to defend the American spelling. It's more common because it is spelled correctly that way for more people.

The idea that a word that was spelled wrong would be more valuable than the correct spelling is silly.

would be interesting to know which tool a guy on that thread used to auto appraise the domain :) anyway I think that $0 appraisals are even better than paid ones.. imho!

I think appraissals are good for one thing if nothing else, thats to show newbies they are wasting there money and slow down and reg names with traffic even if small or only reg the most catchy and familiar names. Some take much longer to realize they are on wrong path, but if enough people tell you that your names are worthless at least you are forced to think they might be right

Remember the old saying. "You get what you paid for." Many just use the appraisals section as free advertising for their names anyways.

That's what I've noticed too, it's a way for Gold Members to put their domain up for sale.
I think it would be more useful if people didn't throw up every name immediately upon registration.

Someone dug deep to find a thread from 2003, eh?
