Does this mean that you do (or don't) have the owner's permission to use all the photos on the site? And will that permission transfer to the new owner?

Yes, all backlinks will stay and if you are interested I can provide you with proof of traffic. I do have perfect trader feedback so hopefully I should be believed, but I am always willing to proove my claims with screenshots upon request.

Car photos are almost never owned by the car website itself, dozens of different websites use them so it is nearly impossible for any one person or group to claim ownership of them. So in short, no I do not have permission, but neither I nor anyone I know has run into legal problems because of manufacturer photos used on a car website.

Yeah, but that's not a sound legal argument for the new site owner when copyright holders start sending out C&Ds.

That wont happen, I can guarantee it - why would car manufacturers send out C&D letters to a site that is helping them advertise their products? I have owned dozens of car websites and NEVER had any problems and as I said before its nearly impossible for anyone to claim ownership of the pictures anyway.
