BEIJING—Chinese search engine Baidu Inc. said Wednesday that it has filed a lawsuit in a U.S. court against Register.com Inc., alleging that a hacker attack on its site last week was due to negligence by the domain-name provider.
"Baidu's complaint alleges that on Jan. 12, 2010 (Beijing time), as a result of the gross negligence of Register.com, Inc., its U.S. domain name registration service provider, the domain name resolution of www.baidu.com was unlawfully and maliciously altered," the company said in a statement.
Baidu's site was disabled for several hours after the attack, and many Internet users cited signs that an Iranian group was behind the attack. Users in China reported seeing a banner for the "Iranian Cyber Army," complete with an Iranian flag and a shattered Star of David, when they tried to access Baidu's home page.
A group also calling itself the Iranian Cyber Army attacked Twitter in December, temporarily disrupting access to the U.S.-based social-networking site.
Baidu's Chinese site baidu.com.cn was unaffected, and only its US-based site baidu.com was disabled.
Register.com wasn't immediately for comment.
