I am not sure of any statistical study on this but what is the break down of daily dropped domains?

95% (dropped because domain is crapola and owner did not want to renew)

5% ( dropped because owner forgot to renew but still wanted domain)

What is a good guess percentage?

Your guess sounds reasonable.

I have picked hundreds of expired names and I have been contacted only a few times by previous holders (or people posing like they are).
My conclusion is that the vast majority of expired domains are truly abandoned.

I dropped mine, not because from forgetfulness or memory loss. It's because I realized how suck they are. Why didn't I realize that from the start.
