Can .com fees can also be increased by the registry?

Recently the new registry contracts allowing .org etc to increase the yearly cost have been in the spotlight at the forums. During the discussions some of us mentioned that later on .com will likely also request new contracts and increased renewal fees too.

Since I believe VeriSign does not manage .org (isn't that PIR?) does the article mean .com may also be increased as it sounds, is the article just worded poorly, or am I missing something?

Of course. The floodgates opened with the decision on the org/biz/info registries, an unprecedented 13-0 vote for the open contracts. What needs to be done now is a pre-emptive lawsuit against ICANN.

I believe the increases for .COM are limited to around 7% max per year.

What has caused much of a fuss is that some registry agreements called for open-ended increases / variable pricing depending on the domain ... not sure what the latest status is on that matter?

Regardless, I seriously doubt such crap would ever fly in .COM due to how so many businesses utilize it ... any who doubt that need only recall back to what happened when VeriSign wildcarded unregistered domains with Sitefinder ... that lasted like a week, if even that, before they were politically forced to take it down despite many other registries (most ccTLDs) long before doing the same exact thing.
