I just don't get it but WHY do people bid well before an auction is even near completion. Logically it would make sense that this does no good and simple drives the price further up. This seems very fruitless. Are they hoping that others will see there are a lot of bidders and an escalating price and simply forget about the auction and allow them to walk away as simple the new highest bidder? Why inch the price up at all until the last possible second? I mean I have better things to do with my time apparently others don't. Maybe phantom bidders are there having fun....never know.

I am guilty of that "sometimes" for a couple reasons.

Sometimes, I have been locked out of bidding at the end. Which is
a common problem at NW. At least, If I place the bid earlier in the
day, I have a chance of getting it.

But, I only bid what I am willing to pay.

If you want to top it. Fine!

I can think of three reasons:

1) People are stupid. :-D

2) Perhaps a person really wants to win the auction and just places a huge bid upfront. If money is no issue, the person just won't care.

3) It's psychological. If an auction goes high early, it may get people to think, "Gee, at the rate this thing is going, I'll never have a chance." After which, they will just forget about the auction and move on.

Maybe #3 is a little far-fetched but I know I've fallen for it before.

A few reasons is time & money. I personally do not have time to live on a computer to wait and see what the final outcome may be & also there is limits to what I'll pay for a domain as mentioned by the other member above. It really has nothing to do with strategy, just merely time & value.
My 2 cents.

Today, was a case in point.

I could not get into NW after 12:45 pm today. And, as of 1:17 pm,
I am still not able to get in.

I assume everyone else had the same problem.

So, to confirm what DomainProfiles had stated. I wasted a half hour
trying to get in. Which, I could have used that time for something else.

Richard,

Had exact same problem today! Could not get past "Manage" without waiting and waiting and waiting only to get the "error page" each and every time btwn 12:45 and 1:20! Got in a little while ago and found EVERY bid I had left yes. or this morn. had been topped!

I got in around 1:20

Naturally, the bids on the crappy/mediocre names, I was still the high bidder.

And, the others. I have no idea how high they went. Since, they
drop the high bid prices after the auction closes.

And, that is why I "sometimes" place high bids at NW. And, occasionally, at Pool.

Why Pool? Because, it occasionally happens there, that you can not
get in. Or, the section freezes. But, not recently.

However, this problem with NW has been going on for many months.

I can't believe they have more traffic now, as compared to 6 - 12 months ago.

So, therefore, I assume they are not putting any more effort into
maintaining/updating their site.
