Sorry, totally disagree that speculation is a major factor in the .co.uk domain space. The stats show just how used .co.uk is as a domain space even though many UK companies have developed their sites around dot com.

The United Kingdom is clearly streets ahead of Continental Europe or indeed anywhere else outside North America in terms of internet development. This is confirmed if you go to Country IPs on Whois Source where UK has 220M compared with Japan 137M, Germany 71M and France 51M. Indeed it compares favourably on a per capita basis with the US on 1,3B.

What is interesting is that although dot de has more registrations and commands better resell prices, it is not nearly as advanced in terms of site development. This begs the question as to why there is such a disparity between dot de prices and .co.uk, if anything it would seem that the latter should be more valuable!
