Some bird told me that CIRA is having a 33% off sale for the month of November.

Can someone confirm this?? I think they should extend that for renewals too!!

Looks like Baremetal.com is the only Registrar who has confirmed this so far.. no one else yet..

Normally, Namespro, Webnames and Burmac are all very good in passing the savings to the customer.
So far none of them have come out with any notifications...

Here is what I saw on Baremetal.com Homepage...
Welcome to BareMetal.com Inc., web-hosting and domain-registration specialists since 1995.
.CA domains ARE on sale for the month of November! 1/3 off first year of new registrations!

I can't recall which registrar, but a few days ago I thought I saw an email for $9.99 .ca names (new ones, not sure about renewals)... possible tied in to this CIRA promotion.

It is meant for new domains only. The best price we have gotten so far is $6.49.

Care to share which registrar?

If one does a Google search for $6.25 .CA domains there is a GoDaddy sponsored Ad that mentions CA Domain Names just $5.99... Click through that and it takes you to the GD page for .ca registrations. At the top of the page there is a yellow dialog box promoting "SPECIAL OFFER! .CA JUST $5.99* PER YEAR!" ...

Conditions:

Customer can register up to three new .ca domains at $5.99 with additional .ca's at site price. Discounts cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer or promotion. Customers may not use gift cards, PayPal® or AliPay to redeem this offer. Your discount will be applied in your shopping cart.

The URL of that page shows a 'cnd5ca08' coupon code, but as in many other cases it may only work when it's used from a session starting from the Google ad.

I just tested it with a new available .ca and made it to the cart where it was shown at C$6.27 including $0.30 in taxes.

I'd prefer to support a Canadian company if I could. Anyone else doing the $6.25 price or something nice and low?

I would (and do) as well....but I am not going to let this pricing for 3 names get by.
The Canadian companies seem to be waiting on this at this point.

The promotion does not apply to all registrars. And even the ones who were approved for it get it at different times.

Unfortunately CIRA doesn't even do these promotions for renewals or even transfers. Next time we have one going on I'll make sure to post a thread here with a discount code.

It's not difficult to find deals all over the place for 1st year reg. of .com's. (.50 for 1 domain at register.com - $1. at many others)
CIRA should consider offering a PERMANENT discount for the 1st year reg. of .ca's

Seems like that is the trend, lots of first year reg coupons at Godaddy, but the renewal type coupons are fading.

They ran $5.99 domain names for .ca last month but this was only due to CIRA making the wholesale offer. The typical $1 .com deals are run by the registrars themselves as loss-leader offers to attract customers, and the companies actually pay Verisign the full price even when customers pay far less.

Sorry, that's what I'm trying to say.
CIRA should institute a PERMANENT wholesale rate of 5 or 6 $ (instead of 8) for the registrars for NEW reg's.
Then, Joe the Plumber can evaluate his new .ca (as opposed to that cheaper, but definitely weaker quality, .com) website, for a few bucks less, but he'll pay the regular future renewal amount just like the .com's are doing.
(CIRA is now pulling in 16,000,000 a year. Even more incentive to boost that budget for more and better junkets, Byron)

I guess if they kept to the original mandate, the cost for .ca domains would be under $7 by now instead of the $8.50 it has been for years.
