Hi,

I would be interested in your opinion whether .co domains are worth investing in. For sure they are no .coms, but still. Would you expect a 1/4 value of the equivalent .com?

1/4 ?
1/1000 is more realistic generally speaking :)

Yes, they are worth it.

I would say Adam could vouch for that.

All of these new extensions are great...for the registry and for a lucky few that have the network to turn them quickly to those that end up being the "bag-holders".
If you are new to this business, stay away from any new extensions. Concentrate on .com primarily, .org as a second choice, and for you .ca - there are still plenty of bargain priced .ca domains if you are serious about "investing" for the long term.

I have had many 1000'% returns on .co domain names. Hoping to get some more sales of my .co's after this weekend!

I think it would be a huge mistake to develop (spend time and resources) on a .co...The exception may be a few names that are top .01% such as adversiting.co - I would say that any non country code, com, net, org extension has to be treated like a brandable and would need major funds to promote..and educate on the funky ending.

.co hasn't had the traffic follow through as anticipated with the .com typo, as a last resort they maybe worth it, or in the category killer name market you will see some returns.

I've sold .CO domains for 500% to 1000% of their original cost. There's money to be made in any TLD, don't forget it. Of course, with secondary extensions, you have to focus on really great keywords. After all, garbage is worthless in extension, including .com.

Ultimately an enduser purchases a domain name to develop it -

IMO for development:
CC domains (for local use) - good call
.com, org, net - good call in that order
.tv & clever hacks - jury still out
.biz, info, .mobi and converted CC's such as .ws, .co, .bz etc... - Bad call for development which means bad call for end users.

Now flipping in the domainer world - I agree that there is a little early money to be made on speculators and possibly brand protectors of generics.

And...there is absolutely some must have garbage that exchanges hands in the x,xxx - xx,xxx range for .com

One of the major selling points was spill-over and typo traffic intended for the .com which never happened. I have several .co minisites and can report basically no traffic.

One in particular is quite disappointing since the .com version is one of the highest traffic sites on the web but no trickle down to dot-co as everyone once expected. By developing .co we are in-effect sending typo traffic to the .com and not the other way around as hoped.

Thanks to places like Godaddy (i.e. Superbowl ads) the hype and valueless excitement continues even today. IMO, except for certain prime 1 word names and rare exceptions .co is worth the same or even less vs extensions such as .mobi .info .us .biz

.com will always be the king, no doubt about that. Anyone thinking the opposite would be just living in their own world. Anyway traffic leakage is much less relevant than it used to be in the past, nowadays a huge portion of the daily traffic is brought in by search engines (read "Google"). the average Joe doesn't even bother to remember domains, he just goes to Google and type the name of the website in the search bar (a lot of people go daily to Facebook by searching for it on the Google page that appears automatically when they launch their browser). As far as a website has what the big G decides to be the right qualities, it will be on page 1 regardless of the extension. For example, .COs can show up on first page in searches with hundreds of millions of results: search for Domain Security and Car Games.

.co domains are worth the investment. I purchased many and have sold a good amount at solid prices. But in full disclosure I've only been able to move my LLL.co names and premium nnn.co domains in the x,xxx range. No keyword .co has been sold- though they get plenty of traffic and clicks.
