Hello-

Just curious about this..

Why is it that some domains have full contact info in the whois under owner while others leave out phone fax and email?

Do the registrars decide if they list that info in whois or not?

Thanks,
Steen.

...and of course some registrars couldn't care less about whether the whois is correct or not - I recently reported two with obviously fake whois and which were related to a fraud offence, Enom still havn't taken any action against the names.

Funny you say that. I got reported for a name with correct whois, lol.

This is the email eNom sent me. I was amazed.
Dear eNom Customer,

We've received a report of false whois from ICANN for
*****.com. Can you please see report below and ensure you or your
customer updates your or their contact information accordingly. Let us know
when done so we can close the report with ICANN. We are contractually
obligated to ensure the data contained and displayed in our whois reflects
complete and accurate contact information. Willful provision of, or
failure to promptly correct, inaccurate data in our whois or failure to
respond inquiries attempting to verify the legitimacy of the data, can be
deemed a material breach of our Registration Agreement and are grounds for
cancellation.

Additionally, please take an extra moment and update any and all names that
may be missing required contact information to avoid reports of this nature
in the future.

Thank you!

eNom, Inc.

looking at my own domains hosted with different registrars, i think it is based upon the tld.

namecheap-
www.whois.sc/hazit.com
www.whois.sc/powed.net
www.whois.sc/bid-up.org
www.whois.sc/ukcareers.info

enom-
www.whois.sc/ppcrates.com
www.whois.sc/xircom.net
www.whois.sc/xircom.org

as you can see, .net and .com have the same format, whilst .org and .info have the same format -- find another .info from enom and i will also be the same.

hope this answered your question.

You are very confused.

Namecheap is not a registrar. They are an eNom reseller. Whois.sc shows the output from the registrar's Whois server for .com and .net domains because the registry for .com and .net domains (VeriSign) does not maintain contact information. They leave that up to the registrars. Your .com and .net domains have the same format because you compared eNom to eNom.

Whois.sc shows the output from the registry's Whois server for .org and .info domains because the registry for .org domains (PIR) and the registry for .info domains (Afilias) both maintain contact information. The registrars submit the contact information to the registry. The format for .org and .info domains happen to be similar because they are probably using the same Whois server software. The format for .biz and .us domains are also similar to each other.
