Could a Direct contact Backfire?

While doing some editing of keywords on a few parked domains I have over at Sedo I came across one Domain Name that is an abbreviation of COMMUNICATIONS, I went on to search for better keywords and a site popped up that is exactly what my domain name refers too but not abbreviated and a dot net extension.
Would it be a bad idea to contact them about my shorter dot com name and it's availability?
