closed DataCube.com 68th oldest domain EVER!

Any feedback (or guesses) as to the value of DataCube.com would be appreciated.

I consider DataCube.com more of a historic site, rather than just a name. It was registered 23-Apr-1987, and was once a flourishing business. Number 68 on the oldest 100 .com list. I am the second owner.

I didn't pick this up for a quick turn around sale. Rather, I am just a history buff!

You can forget it around here, most will say it's worth traffic only. It's a nice name, and I do believe it's got value beyond it's stats.

I have altbbs and altbb dot coms my self, and the nets and orgs to match them. The alt.bbs was the very start of the free and open internet, as we all know it today. Before that big incs owned and control it, that is the internet history at it's finest.

IMO it's a good name for an IT business.
If I were looking for an end user I would think about data aggregators or data mining software like Business Objects (those who use the software are familial with microcube).
Taking into account the fact that the name is 20 years old I would gear for 10K and up.
I know that many among us are collectors too so I wouldn't like to sell it for cheap :smilewinkgrin:

Considering 90%+ of the original .com's on that list are still owned by original owners, and are thriving websites, I think owning one of these is not going to get much easier. I was lucky w/datacube because it barely went "off-line" a couple months ago, as I believe they merged with another company.

I sent emails to every single site on the list that looked like they weren't active and my replies ranged from "get lost" to "yeah, I'll sell it for mid $xxx,xxx to $x,xxx,xxx.". Then I got a reply about DataCube.com that was completely different.

I think the name is cool- and the fact that it was registered in 87. However, I have no idea how people are putting this at mid X,XXX just because it was registered in '87. I think it's a nice gesture by those appraising it, but this isn't an antique car from the 60's-its a domain name. That being said, I still like the name "datacube", especially for an IT firm- but stop giving the guy false hope ! (can anyone provide some examples of X,XXX sales of a name purely because of its WHOIS age while we're on the topic? I am really interested in this concept)

Who is getting "false hope"? When I bought DataCube.com, I did it without a thought as to it's value. There were other reasons for my purchasing it. It could be worth squat, yet I would be just as happy to pay what I paid to obtain it. I appreciate what you are saying all the same.

Age is a relative term. In other words, sure when you compare domains to the age of cars, it can't come close. Just like when you compare the age of cars to historic houses. "Age" is defined by the category it is in only. hundreds of millions of domains have been registered since 1985, and have become very collectible and essential to the internet world. The 100 first of anything with this type of popularity is going to have novelty value regardless of the name.

Obviously, the value these have are defined by the individual only as there really is no litmus test from past sales to go off of.
