I'd say it's almost common for sales and to see in advertising with .com. There have been quite a few country code domain sales with a '-' in them, especially with .de. With .net and .org it seems less common. If you're good at SEO and put the work in you can do probably do well with developping hyphen domains.

If it has good keywords in the domain, people are gonna go for it. It's the type in issue that people don't like because you work so hard only for people to ype in the domain without the "-".
