Hi All:

I recently received a query on pricing for this domain: www.debts.jp. which I am holding. Any thoughts on its worth appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmmm...no comments? Well, I was very curious about this name because a) a new Japanese domain registrar is interested in it and b) the good people at dotcomseekler.com appraised the singular form (debt.jp) earlier this year and I wanted to compare their appraisal with those of you experienced domainers in this forum. Check out the appraisal at this link:

http://dotcomseeker.com/orders/appraisals/71F43399EY6464138-appraisal.htm

I also had the good people at AfterNIC take a stab at it:

http://www.afternic.com/appraisal.php?id=4746

So, can anyone offer any feedback on this one?

AmCy.

I don't like it because .jp is pretty much becoming a pure idn extension, I like it because there's someone with an apparent interest, or at least that's what he/she thinks :=) .

Despite the keyword I would appraise a low to middle $xxx just considering the name.

I have no idea though how much it's worth to your potential buyer.

Oh and afternic appraised debt.jp, not debts.jp ;)

So does dotcomseeker, is it debt.jp or debts.jp ?

Thanks for your comments. Both appraisals were for the singular: debt.jp, which I am also holding.

As far as I know, the transfer process for .jp domains is incredibly complicated. This is what I was told: it costs Y10,000 ($90) and requires documentation by both parties to the transaction that has been legally certified by a local government office or lawyer, or similar.

I would guess that this would dramatically reduce the range of domain name values, since no domains will sell for a few hundred dollars when it will cost more than that in time, effort and hassle to transfer them.

In other words, the "floor" for the .jp extension is probably right around the $500 mark.

That doesn't mean "all .jp domains are worth $500" - quite the opposite: ".jp domains worth less than around $500 are probably worth $0"

Hope that makes sense!

Not any more. .co.jp and .jp are BOTH official extensions now. .co.jp came first, so a lot of large companies use it, but it has huge restrictions (only one domain per company; must match official company name) which .jp doesn't have, so now more and more companies and people are choosing to register in the less restricted .jp extension.

Edwin: The link in your signature: those are the people who contacted me about purchasing debts.jp. Are you affiliated with them in some way?

I read your other post about .JP domains and now the question that has lingered in my mind has become even more pressing: why would they want WWW.DEBTS.JP as opposed to WWW.DEBT.JP? As you write, the Japanese have no concept of the plural. Hmmmmmm.....

I like .JP for I feel that it will have a lot of value in the future, especailly with generic terms. I'll let all the corporate big boys play with .CO.JP. I also feel that the transfer process will get easier over time, just as the process for transferring .COM's has gotten much easier since the mid-90's. Time will tell.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and appraisals.

Yes, my link is an affiliate redirect. I don't work for or with them, though... just send them traffic :)

No idea about why they'd want the plural over the singular, I'm afraid. If I had to guess, it's because neither word will mean anything to a Japanese and therefore they're shopping for the expat market, in which case the plural works better.

Hi Edwin,

There seems to be a misunderstanding of transfering .JP domains and .CO.JP doamins. Transferring .CO.JP domains cost a lot of money, as .CO.JP domains are tied down to company registration information. The company registration information needs to be changed, and depending on the case, a lawyer may be required.

However, .JP domains are very easy to transfer and does not require a lawyer or any official documentation. .JP domains can be transferred for $60 and a one year extension from the expiry date will be added to the domain.

You will need to check with your contract with your previous registrar however, as some domain registrars require at least one month or more left in the registration prior to transferring.

.JP domain transfers happen almost instantly and they work similar to .com transfers, where there will be no downtime during the transfer.

Cheers,
M. Yukai

Looks like I may have been deliberately misinformed by a registrar (not the one in my sig...) I'll try and get independent confirmation.
