Dish DBS, the satellite TV company and owner of Blockbuster, has beaten Google in a public auction for the top level domain .Dot. It paid $700,000 for the rights to the domain name.

Google considered the domain name a "pun", according to the application:

"The purpose of the proposed gTLD .Dot, is to provide the marketplace with a creative alternative gTLD to .com. Google believes in the commercial viability of the proposed gTLD, .dot, given the pun of the phrase "second-level domain name dot dot"

Charlie Ergen, the notorious Dish CEO is well known for being a bully and for its bold, aggressive moves. He often gets into big fights with content providers like TV networks for that, and he wouldn't even have a job without those. He also pisses his own subscribers off all the time. He'll often leave his subscribers way out in the dark without CBS for a long time, or without ABC/Disney/ESPN, as a ploy during price/payment negotiations with content creators/distributors. So his paying so much and beating that giant Google doesn't surprise me that much
